Why Am I Seeing Unrelated Content (and How to Fix It)

Common causes of unrelated content appearing in your workspace, and how to narrow or remove the sources that are capturing it.

If your workspace is pulling in videos or posts that have nothing to do with your brand, one of your content sources is capturing too broadly. This article explains the most common causes on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, and how to fix each one.

Common Causes by Platform

Instagram

  • Tracked hashtag is too generic. Hashtags like #love, #style, or #food are used by millions of unrelated accounts — Archive will pull posts from all of them.

  • Tracked hashtag overlaps with another brand or topic. A short brand hashtag may also be used by unrelated communities.

  • @mention detection caught a similarly named account. If a handle is close to your brand's handle (or there are unclaimed variants), Archive may capture posts mentioning the wrong account.

  • A tracked creator is set to "All Content" mode. When a creator is added in All Content mode, Archive captures every post they make — regardless of whether your brand is mentioned, hashtags match, or the post relates to your brand at all. This is the most common reason for seeing unrelated Instagram content. Switch them to Tagged Content mode if you only want posts matching your tracked terms, mentions, or hashtags.

TikTok

  • Tracked hashtag is a generic trend. Tags like #fyp, #foryou, #trending are used across every niche — pulling them captures the entire feed, not your brand.

  • Sound or trend virality drags in unrelated videos. A trending sound associated with a niche can make unrelated creators use brand-adjacent hashtags to boost reach.

  • Tracked keyword matches a common word. TikTok captions and spoken content often contain casual language — short or common tracked terms pull in unrelated videos.

  • A tracked creator is set to "All Content" mode. When a TikTok creator is added in All Content mode, Archive captures every video they post — including content that has nothing to do with your brand. TikTok creators in particular post across many niches, so this setting floods the workspace quickly. Switch them to Tagged Content if you want to filter by your tracked terms.

YouTube

  • Key phrase is too broad. A single common word as a key phrase will match any video with that word in its title, description, or metadata.

  • Keyword filter is too permissive (or missing). On YouTube, keywords act as filters on top of key phrase search results — they narrow what gets saved. If a keyword is too common (or if no keyword is configured), videos that match a broad key phrase will pass through the filter unchanged.

  • A YouTube creator is tracked in "All Content" mode. Archive captures every video the creator uploads, regardless of content. Switch to Tagged Content mode if you only want videos that match your tracked terms or hashtags.

  • Seasonal or event-based key phrase still active. A Super Bowl or holiday hashtag may keep pulling long after the event is over.

  • Acronym or brand name collides with unrelated terms. Short brand names may match videos about completely different topics.

How to Fix It

Instagram & TikTok — hashtags (always self-serve)

Hashtag tracking is independent of any connected account. Regardless of whether you have an Instagram or TikTok account connected to Archive, you can always add, narrow, or remove tracked hashtags yourself in the app. No need to contact Support.

Instagram & TikTok — disconnecting an account

If an Instagram or TikTok account was connected by accident (e.g. the wrong handle was selected during setup, or a personal account was connected instead of a brand account), you can disconnect it yourself in the app. This stops Archive from capturing content associated with that account going forward.

Instagram & TikTok — non-verified mention sources (contact Support)

If your brand is tracked via a non-verified mention source — i.e. Archive is monitoring a handle that isn't connected to your workspace through the platform's official integration — only Archive Support can add, narrow, or remove that source. Contact Archive Support with:

  • Your Workspace ID

  • The handle or term that is pulling unrelated content

  • Whether you want it removed or replaced by a more specific version

YouTube — keywords and key phrases (contact Support)

All YouTube tracked terms (keywords and key phrases) are managed by the Archive team. To remove or narrow a term, contact Archive Support with:

  • Your Workspace ID

  • Whether each term is a key phrase (search) or keyword (filter)

  • The exact terms you want removed

  • Any replacement terms you want added

Switch a Creator from All Content to Tagged Content

If a creator you track posts mostly off-topic content, switch them from "All Content" to "Tagged Content" mode. Archive will then only capture posts from that creator that match one of your tracked terms, hashtags, or mentions.

  1. Open the Social Profiles page

  2. Find the creator you want to update

  3. Re-import them via Quick Add with Tagged Content selected as the monitoring type

This works the same way for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube creators.

📋 Note: "All Content" monitoring is not available by default on every plan. If you need the inverse — to switch a creator from Tagged Content to All Content — contact Archive Support to check availability on your plan.

Delete Individual Posts

For one-off cases, you can delete individual posts from your library using the Bulk Action Bar. Select the unrelated content and choose delete.

Who to Contact

  • Instagram/TikTok hashtags → Always self-serve in the app (independent of any connection)

  • Disconnecting an Instagram/TikTok account connected by mistake → Self-serve in the app

  • Instagram/TikTok non-verified mention source → Archive Support (in-app chat)

  • YouTube keywords or key phrases → Archive Support (in-app chat)

  • Switching a creator to Tagged Content mode → You can do this yourself via Quick Add on the Social Profiles page

  • Deleting content → You can do this yourself in the app

Preventing Unrelated Content From the Start

  • Use specific, unambiguous tracked terms — full brand names, branded hashtags, or multi-word phrases — rather than short generic words

  • Avoid tracking broad platform-wide hashtags (#fyp, #trending, #love) — they capture everything, not your brand

  • When adding a creator, decide upfront whether you want all their content or only posts that match your tracked terms

  • Review your tracked terms periodically and remove ones that are no longer relevant (e.g. old campaign hashtags, expired event terms)
