Location Filtering in Social Listening

Written by Archive AI
Updated this week

Location Filtering allows you to discover content and creators based on geographic location—helping you power regional campaigns, local activations, and market-specific insights directly from Social Listening.

What Is Location Filtering?

Location Filtering adds two new location-based filters to the Social Listening → Content tab:

1. Creator Location

Filter content by where the creator is based, using the location listed or inferred from their profile.

2. Content (UGC) Location

Filter content by where the post was published, based on:

  • Instagram geotags

  • TikTok location tags

You can use these filters independently or together for advanced geo-targeting.

Example:
Find Los Angeles–based creators who posted content tagged in Paris.

Why Use Location Filtering?

Location Filtering helps brands answer critical regional questions, such as:

  • What content is being posted in a specific market?

  • Which creators are based near an upcoming store opening or event?

  • How is our brand represented across different regions?

Key Benefits

  • Geo-targeted content discovery
Identify UGC and creators relevant to specific cities, states, or countries.

  • Stronger regional strategies
Plan and execute campaigns tailored to local audiences.

  • Efficient creator sourcing
Quickly find creators based in priority markets.

  • Consistent workflows
Access location filtering directly within Social Listening—no need to switch tools.

How Location Data Works

Creator Location

  • Derived from creator profile bios using AI

  • Normalized into a standard hierarchy: Country → State → City

  • Shared across Creator Search and Social Listening

Content (UGC) Location

  • Based on:

    • Instagram geotags

    • TikTok location tags

  • Only applies to posts where a location was explicitly tagged

Coverage & Data Availability

  • Location data is available for a meaningful subset of content and creators, but not all.

  • Content or creators without available location data will not appear when location filters are applied.

Known Limitations

While Location Filtering is fully functional, there are a few important limitations to be aware of:

Limited Results When Combining Filters

Using both Creator Location and Content Location narrows results to the overlap between the two datasets, which may significantly reduce the number of matches.

Incomplete Location Hierarchy

Some posts or profiles may include partial location data (e.g., only a city or state).

These may not always roll up correctly to the country level.

Example:
A post tagged only as “New York” may not appear when filtering by “United States”.

Location Ambiguities

In rare cases, abbreviations may cause unexpected matches (for example, “CA” appearing as both California and Canada). These edge cases are actively being addressed.

Best Practices

  • Start broad (country or state level) before narrowing to specific cities

  • Avoid combining both location filters unless precision is required

  • Use location filters alongside keywords and brand mentions for the best results

What’s Coming Next

We’re actively working on improvements to expand coverage and accuracy, including:

  • Better normalization of city, state, and country relationships

  • Resolution of abbreviation conflicts

  • Expanded location coverage over time

These enhancements will further improve result consistency and depth.

Availability

Location Filtering is being rolled out gradually and may not yet be visible in all accounts. If you don’t see the filters and believe your team should have access, please contact Support.
